AUGUST MEETING August
11 , 2002 Annual Picnic & Auction It's time for the annual picnic and auction and this year we will once again be having at the Good Shepherd Center, located between Sunnyside and Meridian Streets on 50th in Seattle (map). We will be in the shelter on the back side on the building. The Society will supply burgers, buns, fixings, plates, utensils and drinks. Members are asked to bring additional edibles (see box below). Now for the auction part. You can bring up to five plants to sell for your own gain with 20% of the proceeds to go to support one of the following things: the Library Fund, the Wally Curry Zoo Fund, the UW Slipper Fund or the Society's general fund. You can bring additional plants to auction for 100% donation to any of these funds. This is an excellent opportunity to pick up some excellent clones of plants from your fellow orchidists for a minimal price. The bids will begin at a minimum of $5 and go up in $2 increments. If there are two clones of the same plant to be bid on, we will bid on the largest and the next highest bidder will get the next. In order to participate in the auction you must be a paid-in-full member of the NWOS. The picnic will begin at noon, on Sunday the 11th of August. This will take the place of the regular meeting. There is plenty of FREE parking either on the grounds or on the street. It would be a good idea to bring lawn chairs to sit on for the auction part as the shelter is large and the picnic tables don't group well. See you there! FROM THE PRESIDENT Well, it's picnic/auction time once again. I am glad to see that this event has evolved to where it has. That being that we seem to have found a permanent home for it that being the Good Shepherd Center in Seattle. In the past we have had it at differnt members' homes including members who are vendors. Now I have nothing against vendors but when we are having an auction I feel it's better for the society to have a place where the auction will be the only source of plants to be bought. The reason being is that the auction is the way we fund many of our little side projects, so with that in mind when bidding on plants bid big. You'll still get plants for a better deal than from a vendor and you help support your society. I don't know how many of you have bought raffle tickets yet but they are going fast. Just to make sure everyone get a chance at that beautiful print I will be going around at the picnic and soliciting tickets. Remember the money raised will help offset the expenses of our upcoming fall show. Also at the picnic/auction there will be sign-up sheets for the Fall Show. One of the new things we are trying this year is having people sign up to bring goodies to the show to help offset the food budget. So, say you would like to help but can't volutneer time, maybe you could make something to eat and bring it over to my house or someone else on the show commitee and we will bring it to the show. Just a reminder for those who weren't at the last meeting, the beginner's program is now held in the front part of the main meeting room. If anyone has any suggestion for beginner's programs or would like to present one let Jerry Hoffmiester know. Make those divisions and spruce up your plants, I'll see you at the Good Shepherd Center's picnic shelter on the 11th. Jamie
Notman WEB SITE OF THE MONTH This month, we are introducing a new feature: The Web Site of the Month. I will select a web site that I believe members will enjoy viewing via the Internet. Some of the web sites will be informational and others will be showcasing some retail vendors. This month, the website chosen is the Orchid Mall. It is a must for all orchid enthusiasts. The Mall has several links that lead you to over a hundred individual websites. The sections include: Plant sources, supplies, reading materials, and society information. Be prepared to spend hours, if not days, surfing these sites. Darrow Chan July 2002 Web Site of the Month: The Orchid Lady NEWS ABOUT THE FALL SHOW The Show Committee has met once again and the Fall Show and Sale details are nearly complete. A poster, similar to the one from last year (thanks, Mark) is being printed. This time we are getting a smaller version. The same company that did that for us last time will distribute the posters. We talked about the room arrangements and the display, as well as the hospitality for the volunteers and guests. This year there will be an added feature to the show. Art, in three different categories, will be on display for judging and for sale. We will have categories for photography, hand painted/created framed art, and free-standing creations. The art must have a recognizable orchid featured as the subject. All art will be judged and prizes will be awarded. Both amateur and professional artists are encouraged to enter. The artists may put their work up for sale, but buyers may not remove the pieces until the end of the show on Sunday. We can set a pick-up time that is a little earlier than the tear-down time to give people the opportunity to be out of there before the madness begins. If you have not yet purchased your raffle ticket for the big Reichenbachia drawing on September 14th, you can still get some at the picnic on August 11th. And, if you would like to help us sell the tickets, please contact me, Robin Kemph, and I will get a book of them out to you. There are a lot of tickets left, and we could really use help getting them sold. Thanks. We are also looking for more show volunteers. The sign-up sheets will be available at the Picnic. And, finally, the trophy sponsorships... There are many trophies that are looking for a sponsor. The trophies are $25.00 each. You can choose your favorite plant to sponsor, or choose to be part of the People's Choice Award. Last year we did not have many trophy sponsors. We ended up having only two awards. This time we would like to see an award for every category of plants that are at the show. The list will also be at the Picnic. Thanks to all of you for all you do to keep our society an interesting and fun group to belong to! Robin Kemph OTHER NEWS Got a suggestion for a speaker or program? The fall schedule is currently open and first vice president Jerry Hoffmeister is interested in knowing what you would like to hear about at upcoming meetings. E-mail at jerry@hoffmeisters.com or call him (206-932-9912) with your suggestions. Donžt forget to renew your NWOS membership. Dues continue to be a very reasonable $20 for an individual membership and $25 for a joint membership (two adults in a household). A membership renewal form was enclosed with the June issue.
